Thinking about land and Georgia O'Keefe's paintings, I appreciate her perspective. While initially people tend to associate her inclusion of skulls into her paintings as symbols of death, she denied that. She said they were symbols of life and beauty in the desert landscape. They became for her a lens, a viewfinder, a way to see the world. Is there a more stark impression than the frame of death around your view of life? In this way, Randall Griffin said that "O'Keefe transmuted bones into numinous portals linking Earth and Heaven." They became a symbol of enduring strength and beauty.
This is the saint of shifting your perspective in order to persevere. For that perseverance to unexpectedly transform, illuminate a new way, and yield beauty.
"But we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." - Romans 5
